According to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, President Donald Trump does not feel pressure to finalize another trade agreement with Canada due to the imposition of tariffs and worsening relations. As per Greer, critical trade involving products such as oil, gas, and agriculture is still ongoing, thereby making the U.S. content with the current situation. The relationship between both neighbors has deteriorated substantially since the breakdown of the negotiations on trade, which has resulted in the imposition of tariffs amounting to 50% on Canadian goods, retaliation by Ottawa, and the imminent ban by the U.S. on imports such as alcohol and motorcycles. Amidst all these tensions in trade, Trump has increased hostilities through his social media posts declaring Canada as a territory of the United States and the renaming of Lake Ontario as "Lake America."
